Fresno Holistic Medicine combines natural medicine with modern science in an old-fashioned doctor practice. Our goal is to create the most individualized health care experience for your whole family.
Hormones are necessary to provide optimal wellness and vitality. When hormones are out of balance, we may experience PMS, insomnia, fatigue, hot flashes, weight gain, loss of sex drive, hair loss, mood swings, increased facial hair, vaginal dryness, frequent bladder infections, and suboptimal aging. Bio-identical hormones are natural hormones that mimic what the body should be producing. Many women prefer bio-identical hormones over synthetic hormones based on warnings coming from The Women’s Health Initiative Study showing synthetic hormone use can increase risk for strokes, breast cancer, colon cancer, heart disease and blood clots. It is important to mention that there have not been similar studies done on bio-identical hormones on safety, therefore the side-effects of high dose, long-term BHRT are theoretically similar to the side effects of synthetic hormones. What makes BRT more appealing is that I recommend the lowest dose based on your symptoms and a laboratory test of hormone levels. In addition, you will be carefully monitored to ensure safe and effective symptom relief with the lowest dose possible (for the shortest time necessary).
Dietary Counseling & Therapeutic Nutrition
Hippocrates said “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” It is amazing how much our diets can influence our health and how we feel. Dietary recommendations will be based off symptoms you are experiencing, your general health and a complete evaluation of your diet, which means that you will complete a “diet diary” (you can pick this up at the office or download it from the patient handouts page) for me to review. Your diet can be the reason why you are experiencing fatigue, vitamin deficiencies, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, allergies, gout, diabetes, hypoglycemia, eczema, fatty liver, ADHD and osteoporosis.
You can download our Diet Diary form if you’d like to get started.
Environmental Medicine & Detox Program
In this day and age it is nearly impossible to avoid chemicals and toxins, and it certainly doesn’t help that we reside in the Central Valley. Environmental medicine focuses on supporting the body’s detoxification pathways reducing the body’s toxin and chemical burdens.
Allergy Testing & Comprehensive Digestive Care
Food Sensitivity Testing is a blood test that measures food and/or environmental allergens in order to identify triggers that are responsible for symptoms. I have helped countless patients improve allergy symptoms, eczema and IBS symptoms (diarrhea, constipation, abdominal cramps, gas and bloating). This test is great for patients who have felt “allergic” to a substance that could not be identified through standard skin scratch testing. In addition to identifying the cause of allergy symptoms and poor digestion, plans are tailored to healing the intestinal lining and improving digestion. We can also work together to get you off acid-blockers that are preventing adequate absorption of nutrients that can predispose patients to osteopenia/osteoporosis (low bone mineral density).
High Cholesterol & High Blood Pressure
We offer a range of laboratory testing that can assist in determining what is the most appropriate course of action. There are additional costs associated with laboratory tests.
We usually recommend our food intolerance assessment @ our first visit, and a few supplements.
I offer comprehensive health care for infants, toddlers and teens. I focus on wellness and preventative medicine, but I also use safe and effective natural medicines to treat a wide spectrum of childhood health concerns. You will be pleased to discover that antibiotics aren’t the only solution for ear infections or to be given the opportunity to discuss vaccinations in depth with your doctor. During your pediatric visits, I will take a thorough history, gently conduct necessary physical exams and possibly order lab testing. There will always be time for parent and child to ask questions during the visits. Treatments are gentle, safe and effective. I recommend well child visits at 2 weeks, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 15 months, 18 months; yearly thereafter. I also make same-day appointments for sick kids.
Holistic Weight Management
Many Americans struggle with weight management as they succumb to yo-yo dieting, unrealistic goals and promises of “miracle” weight loss strategies. Our holistic weight management programs are customized to your health and goals while taking into consideration why your body is resistant to losing weight. Your weight management program may also include dietary counseling, repletion of nutrient deficiencies, improving digestion, treating food sensitivities, optimizing blood sugar control as well as an exercise prescription. Occasionally I refer patients to holistic counselors if I am concerned that weight management is negatively influenced by stress eating and using food as a stress coping mechanism. Addressing the emotional/mental aspect of weight and body image is key to permanent maintenance of weight loss.
IM Vitamin Injection & B12 Shots
B vitamins are essential for energy production, brain and nervous system function and healthy skin and hair. Vegetarians/vegans and patients with digestive disorders, taking certain medications like Metformin, or have low stomach acid are often deficient in B vitamins. A vitamin injection is the administration of a pure and prescription only version of B-vitamins and/or antioxidants into a muscle to help replete your nutrient deficiency, improve fatigue and stress management, enhance mood and support immune function. Vitamin injections are offered to established patients only.
Intravenous Vitamin Therapy
Intravenous (IV) vitamin therapy is the administration of a natural and prescription-only version of nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, directly into the body through a vein in order to bypass digestion. IV vitamin therapy is a safe and effective method of supporting the immune system during illness and stress, repleting nutrient deficiencies in patients with poor digestion (ulcerative colitis, food sensitivities, leaky gut, chronic diarrhea) and is a unique treatment option for patients with fibromyalgia. IV vitamin infusions are offered to established patients only; they take 30 minutes to 3 hours for a treatment.
Natural Pain Management
More and more patients are becoming leery of using pain medications due to fears of narcotic addiction or liver toxicity. Even over-the-counter Tylenol and Ibuprofen have been linked to health problems. I have been working with patients to come up with alternative pain management options, ranging from natural anti-inflammatory, topical treatments and vitamin injections tailored to reduce muscle tension and pain.
Primary care Medicine
Dr. Tais can be your primary care provider and handle of your health care needs, including but not limited to:
We can order all diagnostic tests and manage your referrals.
We cannot refill schedule 1 or 2 medications; this means Dr. Tais cannot prescribe any narcotic pain medication or ADHD medication, but can recommend natural alternative or refer you to a psychiatrist or pain specialist.
Dr. Tais also cannot complete any state disability or employment forms that specifically require a signature from an MD or DO.
At this time our office does not carry any vaccines but we are planning to add vaccines in the near future.
Natural Fertility Treatment
I have spent a great deal of time studying and practicing natural and holistic methods of enhancing fertility as well as conventional methods. In fact, I spent some of my residency training at Seattle’s premier IVF centers (Seattle Reproductive Medicine and Pacific Northwest Fertility). Many of my patients seeking an integrative and holistic approach to fertility management are interested in finding and treating the cause of their infertility. During your first visit, I will take a very thorough history, perform necessary physical exams and order valuable blood work (and possibly imaging if I am concerned about your uterus or fallopian tubes). Together, we will develop a plan that includes dietary improvements, lifestyle changes, nutritional supplementation and herbal medicines that will improve fertility.
I offer a comprehensive health care program customized to enhance fertility; that includes 5 distinct phases. You may choose anyone of these options:
Preconception Care: designed for both male and female patients and should begin 3 months prior to actively attempting conception. This goes well beyond a recommendation for taking prenatal vitamins and will include education on optimal timing for intercourse (fertility awareness)
Natural Conception Plan: 4-6 months of utilizing natural treatments to enhance fertility.
Integrative Conception Plan: 6 months of integrative (both holistic and drug options) to enhance fertility.
Integrative Fertility Support: This is reserved for patients whose only viable option for conception is In vitro Fertilization. I can work with your reproductive endocrinologist and offer safe and effective nutritional, dietary and herbal treatments to optimize your IVF experience.
Holistic Pregnancy Support: Although I am not licensed to offer obstetric care, I can offer pregnant women natural treatments for common pregnancy-related issues such as anemia, high blood sugar, nausea, constipation, and yeast infections. You will have to establish care with an OBGYN or midwife for your prenatal care and delivery.

Dr. Setareh Tais ND
Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine
I’m so glad you found me! My name is Setareh Tais, and I am licensed by the State of California to practice naturopathic family medicine. My practice blends modern science, evidence-based research on natural medicines, integrative clinical experience and naturopathic medical philosophy.
My interest in natural and holistic medicine began when I was an undergrad at the University of California, San Diego studying Animal Physiology and Neuroscience. I was on a pre-med track and had my heart set on becoming a doctor. Like most of us, I have a personal story that led me to pursue and appreciate natural and integrative medicine. During college I became more inquisitive about my father’s medical care. I was perplexed that his medical doctor was managing his high cholesterol with medication alone, while ignoring his dietary habits and sedentary lifestyle. Soon after my father started his Lipitor prescription (a statin medication with diabetes and memory loss as new FDA warnings), he began to experience severe muscle pain that caused him to stay in bed applying ice packs to his sore muscles. My father had developed “statin-induced myopathy” which is a well-known side effect of statin medications and was told by his doctor to stop taking his cholesterol-lowering medication. With a little bit of education and encouragement, my father became motivated to begin exercising and improving his diet. He got a gym membership, started riding his bike, and eating salad with his dinner every night. Now 16 years later, he has excellent cholesterol and blood pressure, he is still exercising and eating well, and he doesn’t take any prescription medications.
My father’s medical history reinforced my belief that naturopathic medicine is strongly needed in the United States, especially for patients who don’t tolerate their medications or for patients who have a philosophical preference to avoid unnecessary medications. While all forms of medicines have a place in today’s health care, I enjoy offering an integrative approach to medicine from natural medicines to dietary and lifestyle modifications to prescription drugs when/if they are necessary. In 2004, I attended Bastyr University in Seattle, WA and after graduation I completed a unique holistic and integrative family medicine residency. During this time, I completed a challenging and busy program dedicated to clinical training in both naturopathic medicine and conventional medicine (Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Reproductive Endocrinology, Gynecology and Cardiology).
I have moved back to Fresno in 2013 to offer naturopathic medicine at Fresno Holistic Medicine. My goals are to determine the underlying cause of illness and to work with you on disease prevention and improving general health. Treatment plans extend beyond a prescription pad, are individualized and treat the whole you, and utilize current scientific evidence.
Naturopathic medicine is not just a cool trend I jumped into later in my career, I had to study it and apprentice with other naturopathic doctors before I was even eligible to apply to naturopathic medical school in 2004! It is truly an honor to be entrusted with your care and serve as your local naturopathic doctor.
I am looking forward to meeting you!
